WALNUTS

The word walnut derives from Old English wealhhnutu, literally "foreign nut", wealh meaning "foreign".  The walnut was so called because it was introduced from Gaul and Italy.

The nuts of all the species are edible, but the walnuts commonly available in shops are from the Persian Walnut, the only species that has a large nut and thin shell.  The nuts are rich in oil which is relatively expensive and consequently is used sparingly, most often in salad dressing.

Walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, and have been shown as helpful in lowering cholesterol.  They need to be kept dry and store best if refrigerated.

Western Commodities import carefully selected organic walnuts from India, a principal exporter of quality walnuts.  The state of Kashmir in the northwest of India is India’s main walnut-producing region.  Our organically certified supplier has a long standing reputation within the region and is now the largest grower in India, accounting for approximately 25% of total exports of Indian walnut kernels exports.

Western Commodities can supply light amber walnut halves, light amber walnut pieces and we can also produce an organic diced walnut from our organically certified factory based in the UK.
