Iranian Pitted Sayer Dates
2008 crop is larger than in previous seasons; no one can tell the exact figures because Iranian statistics are notoriously nonsensical. What we do know is that the percentage of decent sized fruit is very low. This will equate to a higher than normal premium for Select Grade fruit.
The region of Shadegan is to be discounted this year. The fruit is dark, high in moisture due to the extreme humidity suffered during the drying phase and ‘tired’ in appearance. This is due to the sand storms coating the fruit in dust whilst still on the palm drying. The regions of Abadan and Ahwaz (Karoon) are both o.k.
Prices are around $100 up from last year; this of course subject to the prevailing exchange rate between US Dollars and Iranian Rials. Banking restrictions continue to make dealing with Iranian banks almost impossible, but as experienced traders we have this down to a fine art of course.
In terms of quality we continue to press on with developments at origin to further improve quality, cleanliness and consistency. Our next bi-annual visit to the region is scheduled for mid November.
In the U.K we continue to improve our systems and processes as our recent BRC Grade A accreditation testifies. We have installed x-ray machinery this year to remove even the tiniest stones.
We await your enquiries with keen interest.
